    Outstanding Book

An ocarina is a lot of fun to play, but it does have a limited range of notes. A real improvement is a double ocarina, which has a little more than 2 full octaves of notes. The double ocarina has another advantage: there is no right hand thumb hole, which allows the right hand thumb to act as support for the ocarina. The high notes E and F on a regular ocarina are played on the second chamber of a double ocarina rather than having to lift the right hand thumb. But there is the issue of changing from one chamber to the other, and the whole question of supporting the ocarina when the right hand fingers move from one chamber to the other.
The best book I have found on playing the double ocarina is The Art of Ocarina for Double Ocarina by Dennis and Laura Yeh. The book discusses the issues of using both chambers, switching between chambers, having the fingers in place before playing from the other chamber, and using the fingers appropriately to support the ocarina. The book also provides useful suggestions for practicing songs on the double ocarina. The book also helps a student develop a useful repertoire of songs for the double ocarina. As a added bonus, there is a fingering chart that is actually large enough to read. It’s hard to imagine a better book on the subject of playing a double ocarina.
