    What is Purple Clay?

    Purple Clay, also known as ( Zisha or Purple Sand ), is a rare natural mineral resource found only in the region of Yixing, China. It is comprised of clay and other minerals such as quartz. Although named "purple clay" it is usually rose-brown in color, although some other colors exist. Because of its unique blend of minerals, purple clay is more durable than other clays once it has been fired. It is also more porous. As a result, ocarinas made of purple clay actually improve with time. As the clay absorbs the moisture created by playing, the clay vibrates differently and becomes more resonant.

    Love the tone! Easily played too sharp!!! Very quiet!!!

    This ocarina has such a cute tone! This is a soft-blown ocarina, which requires very VERY little breath to play. You can very easily play way too sharp on it (a half step up) with the same amount of air as a common Alto C ocarina (might as well be a soprano C# ocarina lol). I had to slightly cover the sound hole with tape to lower the pitch a little more to confiscate for the pitch being too high, which allows me to put in a little more air and expressiveness in my playing with the sacrifice of the low notes sounding a little airy. This doesn’t bother me though since I love the cute and pure tone it has.

    The ocarina itself plays in tune overall once you figure out the breath control level. I noticed that the higher the note, the less air you’ll use (most ocarinas do the OPPOSITE), which is GOOD if you don’t want a screeching sound in the high range, but is BAD for musical expression.

    I recommend this to people who want to have a quiet soprano C to practice on without needing ear protection for the higher notes. No this is NOT a good front-line soprano C ocarina for septet/ensemble music. This ocarina is unique and super fun to experiment with. Definitely worth the generous price.
