  • The ocarina, a type of vessel flute, is the world’s oldest instrument, dating back thousands of years. Made of clay or bone, these early flutes could be found in various sizes and shapes. The ocarina’s origins have been traced back to many countries including Central and South America, India, and China. The modern “sweet potato” shaped ocarina was developed in Italy in the 1800s and has enjoyed popularity in that region since that time. Later, the Italian model was further developed by Japanese ocarina makers who created the twelve-hole design that is now in common usage worldwide. Today, the ocarina is used to make music throughout the world. It is truly an ancient traveler. Come listen to its tale!
